Namirembe Cathedral Organ and Piano students

imageOn the afternoon of July 16th, I conducted a workshop with organists and pianists at Namirembe Cathedral. This session began with organ music. I worked with organ students Paul Luggya and Paul Africa. Although the instrument was not in good condition, we discussed how to achieve maximum musicality by emphasizing carefully phrased ideas and articulated playing. We also discussed registration and using both crescendo and foot pedals. The workshop continued with improvising on the piano with another four pianists. We used Dr. Hancock's improvisation textbook for guidelines on how to use the circle of fifths, scales, and short motifs in order to create music instantly. Ivan Kiwuwa, a choirboy studying piano and violin in Wales ended the session with a performance of piano pieces by Felix Mendelssohn.
