Women’s Leaders at Bulange, Mengo

After the church service at Namirembe Cathedral on July16th, I met with Mrs. Joyce Ssebugwawo, the minister of works, women's affairs and community development in Buganda Kingdom. She requested that I attend the women's leaders conference, which took place at Bulange, Mengo, the kingdom's capital building, on July 18th. Mrs. Sebugwawo is a choir member in the Nyonza Singers, a group that used to travel to Canada for music festivals. Apart from her political responsibilities, Mrs. Ssebugwawo is interested in assisting women in developing cultural performances in Buganda. The neatly-dressed ladies began their meeting by singing both the Buganda Kingdom and Uganda national anthems. During this meeting, many ideas were discussed, among them promoting cultural performances. From this meeting, I learned that this group is searching for funding to assist with acquiring music, instruments, and recording equipment in order to run their cultural programs more smoothly.
